Stress-Free Sailing: Single and Short-handed Techniques Paperback – Illustrated, 12 Mar. 2015

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 646 ratings

By definition couples sailing alone have to do everything for themselves. They leave the berth, set the sails, helm the boat, navigate, trim the sails, anchor, pick up mooring buoys, enter harbour, moor up and all without the help of any extra crew. So they need to carry out these manoeuvres efficiently and effectively, with as little physical effort as possible.

Review

This excellent book would make a fine present for anyone who goes on the water. --The Ensign

Duncan Wells tackles a vast range of topics from marina berthing to anchoring. Wells' approach is not always standard procedure, but it is rooted in safe seamanship, logic and a practical appreciation of sailing reality. His trickbag is a delight that will change the habits of many experienced yachtsmen and make life easier for many newcomers. --- Sailing Today

Just to say that I do respond to questions in the reviews section. So if you have asked a question or made a point you may well find that I have responded to it it so do have a look every now and then. If you want to contact me directly then duncan@duncanwells.com will do the trick or through the westviewsailing.co.uk website.

I do quite a few things. I try to do them as well as I can. I'm principal of Westview Sailing, an RYA Instructor, a sailor, a voiceover actor, a writer, a speaker, I have invented MOB Lifesavers which add into life jackets and solve the problem of how we get a comatose casualty in the water back on board. We don't go down to the MOB, he comes up to us. 'With an MOB Lifesaver the casualty has their means of retrieval back on board, stowed within their own lifejacket" - approved for Crewsaver, Spinlock, SeaSafe, Baltic & Ocean Safety lifejackets - moblifesavers.com . I write for Yachting Monthly, Sailing Today and Practical Boat Owner in the UK and Sail Magazine in the USA. I write and produce the Westview Sailing Tutorial videos which RYA Day Skipper and Yachtmaster shore based students find to be a useful study aid and which get them through their RYA exams. These videos are also available on Udemy. I am on a number patient and relative committees and Trial Steering Committees, representing patients to the NHS. All this as a result of having been shot by a faulty collision warning flare which back fired and lodged in my abdomen. Ironically I was filming the correct way to deploy emergency and safety flares. I spent 9 months in hospital as a result, 4 months in intensive care and 6 weeks in a coma. I survived what the medics refer to as an 'unsurvivable accident'. Still we're OK now. Bits and pieces inside are missing but actually one doesn't need everything we are born with to be able to live very well indeed. One just needs humour and, Cotes du Rhone - lots of that. I have written Stress Free Sailing, which is very popular and we have recently published Stress Free Motorboating. I am now working on my next book which will be called Stress Free Navigation. Stress Free Navigation will approach navigation in a different way. Instead of starting with a paper chart in a dusty classroom, we start off on board our boat and take the cover off this wonderful piece of kit, the chart plotter. Well that's the first thing you are going to use, isn't it? By working through what the chart plotter does we relate everything to the paper chart. And there will be handy short cuts, 'Course To Steer in your head', of course and 'Secondary Ports in your head'. Just like SFS and SFM we will have QR codes and videos to add clarity to what we are explaining.

Amazing book that gives you some brilliant techniques for solo and short-handed sailing. The accompanying videos are really great and because I bought the kindle version they're all embedded in the text.

I think my favourite parts were the casting off and docking as those are, without doubt, the most stressful part of sailing. My boat is a littel big for single-handed sailing (46'), but as long as I don't have to berth stern-to in the med, I would be happy to have a go at these techniques (although maybe I'll cheat and have someone else on board the first time - just in case!)

It's written in a conversational style that makes it really easy to read and understand. If you are new to sailing, this is a great introduction and if you're experienced some of the suggestions will be an eye-opener (like: "why did I never think of that before?")

I love this book. I bought it after meeting the author in Cowes recently. His sailing articles and tutorials in other sources were very helpful to me in passing my Day Skipper a few years ago. Meeting Duncan was a pleasure. The book is a pleasure to read and the videos, accessible via QR code, are very well done. I particularly like the sense a reader is given that things don't always work out and that the author makes mistakes too. Probably quite a few less than I do! But it makes me feel a little more comfortable to know that when I screw up a manouevre, it can happen to anyone. Any sailor will benefit from the techniques demonstrated here even if you sail with a full crew all the time.

Very good book. Lots of very good and well explained techniques. I sail mostly single-handed so it was good to see some of the techniques I've devised by trial and error over the years validated and also discover some additional techniques. Wish the book had been available when I first started sailing.
The accompanying videos are really useful in clarifying some of the written explanations. Overall, well worth the price

We are somewhat overwhelmed by this excellent book, it seems to address all the concerns that we have about sailing our Southerly 101 around the Solent. It really is full of know-how and useful tips. Everything from knots to dealing with smelly heads. Entertaining, and witty, Duncan has a fine writing style, and the photographs are clear and really help explain some quite tricky manoeuvres. There is the added bonus of access by QR codes to his well made action training videos
He tells us that in his experience "..boating is just a matter of lurching from one crisis to the next." How true!
No cruisers should go to sea without it. Absolutely tops. And totally stress-free!

The first rule, is to look cool. Joking aside, the last thing you need coming in or out of a marina is stress. This book is full of super useful tips to make all those seemingly tricky things about sailing MUCH easier.
Duncan writes in a no nonsense way, specifically avoiding (and sometimes calling out) those stuffy traditionalist who say "but it must be so" and instead provides real and tested solutions to every day problems.
    Simply sublime!

I gave 5 stars for the excellence and simplicity of the ideas presented, the clarity of the descriptions and closely linked videos and for the fact that most of the tips given have been thoroughly practised by the author.

Interesting book, but partly not easy to read even for an experienced sailor like me. I haven't done my training in the UK, and often am confused by the terms used.
I would also appreciate more graphics (rather than photos), which would partly make it easier to understand.
Otherwise a good book for especially if you areplanning to sail with small crews.

I’ve been through the US Sailing certifications for bare boating, and then on to Tursi’s wonderful US Sailing book on Coastal Navigation, and more recently the very practical RYA Land based Yachtmaster course. Duncan Wells entertaining and witty book still provided many practical insights and pointers that I found invaluable. The embedded videos were pertinent and well done, beautifully illustrating the book text. I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in sailing, from beginners on to the more experienced.
