Too useful to return but it could be so much better!

Too useful to return but it could be so much better!
Getting the triggering to work is fiddly - too many modal buttons! You have to use the 1k long buffer to get a full screen display of a chip select going at 500kHz. If u stick with the 4k setting, only the left half of the screen updated (which took me a little while to figure out).Sadly, the 2 digital channels C & D don't work.

I just received this oscilloscope today and have been very impressed with it so far. The instruction manual isn't great, but if you search youtube for "DSO Quad" or "DSO203" there are some good introductions to the device/reviews. The firmware has been updated, so while there are a few changes from what you see on youtube, the updates have made it more intuitive.

A couple of tips for after you've watched some youtube tutorials: in the latest firmware the triangle button toggles between the top menu and the menu on the right. The circle button toggles a popup menu that gives a lot of useful data like peak-to-peak voltage, equivalent dc voltage, frequency, High and low voltage, duty cycles etc. The popup is pretty useless initially as the values (which are colour coded to match channels A through D), are spread out across the 4 channels at random. Press and hold the circle button and you'll find that you can edit the menu using the left most jog dial (left and right to change value being measured, select to change the channel). Use the right most jog dial to move to the next value in the menu and select on the right most jog dial to save your settings.

I have really been impressed with the build quality, quality of the probes etc. The LCD screen is surprisingly good for a device at this price point, but the viewing angle isn't as good as high end devices like my smartphone. Again this was to be expected.

Compared with my (fairly decent) Maplin Precison Gold multimeter there seems to be quite a large margin for error when reading voltages. Right now I'm assuming that voltages can be read +/- 10% from the oscilloscope, although it may be better than that. Various other reviews/forums suggest there may be similar inaccuracies with the time/frequency. As long as you are aware of these limitations this is a great device for viewing and analysing waveforms.

For me any limitations of this device are completely outweighed by the price, features, build quality, and the fact that I can put it in my pocket and take it with me rather than having a CRO that requires half the available workbench space!

One small niggle: the USB cable that came with it was defective, it would allow the device to connect to a computer, but would not charge it. Initially I thought it was a problem with the device, but then I noticed the led near the top right corner of the screen wasn't lighting up, so that made me think to try another cable. Thankfully the device is working perfectly with the substitute USB cable.

Shipping was fast. The price is reasonable and I'm fond of Sainsmart products. It comes in a really nice dark aluminium case and has a great look about it. The storage bag is a tight fit but is very nice plush with a little wooden bead to keep it closed. Very classy. It would make a heck of a stocking stuffer for that special someone. Sainsmart put a lot of work into this. In the past these small handheld scopes have had a bad reputation. Most of them have a dodgy firmware or are packaged inside a generic mp3 player case. Lucky you can upgrade to a 3rd party firmware that's easily found on the net. This version seems to have these issues resolved.

Unfortunately, I was surprised at the size of the unit when it arrived. It's about the size of a pack of cigarettes. Though the LCD screen is fairly high resolution, I was unable to really see the information on it. The text is a couple of millimeters at most. The screen is really very tiny. Your eye sight is probably much better than mine, but even with my glasses I found it hard to see the tiny details. I knew right away this wasn't going to work for me. If you're checking a square wave or checking the quality of a power supply, you'll be pressing lots of buttons to zoom in and hopefully see what you're after. It will be a real struggle and you'll need the patients of a saint. I was tempted to purchase a magnifying glass, but decided that it would be ridiculous.

I was impressed with the contents of the box however. The two test leads are very nice quality and overall the construction of the scope and the sockets for the leads, as well as the buttons and it's overall layout is impressive. A few Youtube videos give it high marks. The text in the manual however a healthy mix of Chinglish and requires a microscope to read. It's best to get some Tylenol before you start.

Who is the scope for? Well, if you're a hobbyist, this might (and I really mean "might") be the thing for you. However, if you can find something bigger it will save you a lot of grief. A cheap used analog scope found on gumtree for £40 might work out better. This might not be a good choice for your very first scope. This is for someone who really does want to use it in the "field." It's really a technicians gadget and not at all practical as a regular, use as a home kind of scope.

Although this unit didn't work out for me and I sent it back for refund, it might work out for you. If this is your first scope, I'd carefully weigh your options. I'd consider this the first real pocket scope to hit the market, though not a scope for everyone.

I bought one of these about a year ago, they are fantastic value with awesome functionality while they are still working (especially if you download custom firmware) however mine is now useless. The calibration was never great (didn't bother me) but after a while it started displaying garbage and the battery wouldn't charge, the memory wouldn't work, and it kept freezing up. I tried to fix it by ordering a replacement battery but this didn't solve the problem. I couldn't get it to talk to my pc any more so couldn't try refreshing the firmware. I wish it was more robust as it beats conventional products hands down for value but at the end of the day I have sadly opted to replace it with a conventional cro that does much less but which will hopefully keep on doing it for more than a few months.

The manual is very difficult, not being helped as it is for a previous software version. Some of the commands don't work as described, and some I haven't found yet. Very nice size and layout though.

This looks a nice piece of kit. As I am inexperienced, I need decent instructions and these don't come with the unit.
What I did find on the web seemed to be for a slightly different version. However, the cotrols are fairly intuitive and I did get results after some experimentation.
The screen is clear for the amount of information displayed. It can show 2 analogue and 2 digital traces and there are menu options to display the measured values digitally. Settings can be stored to save time for future usage.
The two probes that are supplied are comprehansive, of good quality and are switched for x 1 or x 10. A versatile and very portable instrument. It runs on an included rechargeable battery.

Me defraudó bastante el tamaño. Todo tan pequeño que es difícil observar, manejarlo, configurar y navegar por los distintos menús. Util para cosas puntuales, pero no para un uso continuo en análisis de señales o investigación de averías.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un excellent outil d'appoint
Reviewed in France on 11 September 2015
